Sentara Trauma Services prioritizes not only treating traumatic injuries but also preventing them. As Hampton Roads only Level 1 Trauma Center, Sentara Norfolk General Hospital (SNGH) is dedicated to taking care of and serving the community around us. The goal of SNGH's Injury Prevention Program is to take a look at the population we serve daily through our Trauma Registry Data and work to implement prevention initiatives in relation to the types of trauma cases we see.
The majority of cases we see in the SNGH Trauma Center are Motor Vehicle Crashes (MCVs), Falls, gunshot wounds (GSWs)/assaults/stabbings and burns. Motor Vehicle Crashes (MVCs) make up forty percent of the injuries at SNGH’s trauma center, and in 2022, more than twenty-three percent of our trauma patients had fallen. The goal of the Injury Prevention program is to educate and equip those in our community to live safe, healthier lives through prevention initiatives. We do this by partnering with existing community organizations that align with our program’s goals, developing and implementing programs and informational materials and attending community events. The majority of the presentations and classes are free of charge.
We are dedicated to reducing risks and enhancing protective factors in our community.
