Motor Vehicle crashes are the leading cause of injury death in the United States and an important area to target to prevent trauma and emergency room visits. By focusing on seat belts and child passenger safety, distracted driving, teen driving safety as well as alcohol-impaired driving, together we can save lives.
Motor Vehicle Injury Prevention Programs Offered:
AARP Smart Driving Class
Motor vehicle crashes make up 37% of the injuries treated at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, and 29% of those injuries involve drivers over 50. The Sentara trauma team and AARP offer the AARP Smart Driver course for senior drivers over age 50. The Smart Driver course helps senior drivers refresh their skills and learn the new rules of the road. A certificate of completion, submitted to your insurance company, could lower your premiums. This course is for ages 50+. It’s $20 for AARP members and $25 for non-members. Learn more and register online.
Drive Safe Hampton Roads
Sentara Norfolk General Hospital Injury Prevention is a proud supporter of Drive Safe Hampton Roads (DSHR), a Virginia-based regional coalition whose mission is to improve roadway safety and reduce death and injury from vehicle crashes using initiatives that include educational programs, information sharing, and partnerships with public and private sector organizations.
We are a community liaison partner for the Git It Together (GIT) High School Seat Belt Challenge. In this challenge, local high schools compete to raise students’ awareness of the importance of wearing seatbelts every time they ride together. Together, this program has positively influenced the traffic safety habits of more than 875,000 Hampton Roads students.
Distracted Driving Simulator
We offer several opportunities to educate our community about distracted driving. One program is the to prevent distracted and impaired driving among young drivers. This program consists of simulation drives, first-person consequence videos, interactive quizzes and expert advice. You can request to have this simulator at your community event by filling out our Injury Prevention Information Form.
Distracted Driving Activity Mat
We also offer a Distracted Driving Activity Mat for community events depicting a rural town setting with streets, crosswalks, railroad crossings and other common town locations and roadway features. The challenge is to drive through town using the DIES® Steering Wheel with car to simulate a driving experience. Distractions such as texting while driving will typically cause the driver to make errors such as missing turns, driving off the road, driving through stop signs, or hitting pedestrians. The resulting experience demonstrates how distractions detract from a person’s ability to operate a motor vehicle safely. You can request to have this Activity Mat at your community event by filling out our Injury Prevention Information Form.
Impairment Goggles
Another program offered for community events is the Fatal Vision® Alcohol Goggles. These goggles deliver memorable lessons on topics like impaired driving, underage drinking, and other substance abuse issues. Participants perform simple activities or sobriety tests without and then with the goggles. Performing the activities twice lets participants experience their performance while unimpaired and then impaired. You can request to have the Impairment Goggles at your community event by filling out our Injury Prevention Information Form.
