Our adult and senior behavioral health inpatient programs provide diagnostic services and treatment for people 18 and older who are in crisis due to mental illness, emotional distress or destructive behavior patterns.
Because our treatment facilities are located within several of our hospitals, patients have access to the full range of both psychiatric and medical care.

Sentara Behavioral Health Services provides a variety of outpatient treatment services through our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP).
IOP is designed for patients with chemical dependency and substance addiction who are beginning recovery. The program allows patients to receive the help and therapy they need with minimal disruption to their lives.

The Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is designed for anyone who is:
- Experiencing severe depression and having difficulty maintaining day-to-day functioning at home, at school, or on the job
- Having difficulty managing stress or anxiety in day-to-day living
- Experiencing significant problems or conflicts in relationships
- Needing a structured and protective environment but do not need 24-hour care.
The philosophy of our LIFE Recovery program is that alcohol/drug dependency is a chronic and progressive, but highly treatable, disease.

Preparing for your appointment

Group therapy is offered to those 18 years of age and up and is geared toward certain issues. Our group therapy settings consist of clients joining together in the healing process, finding strength in their shared experience and comfort in the support of the group dynamic. Each group is led by one of our therapists and addresses issues ranging from mental health, addiction and other obstacles that hinder the health and day-to-day functions of the members.
