Location: 4 Kaufman, Family Maternity Center
The Family Maternity Center includes a 57-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) to take care of babies who are born early or require a higher level of care. Babies in the NICU may require more medical equipment to adjust to the world, but the NICU is also a place where we encourage parents to bond with their infants in their earliest stages of life. Our NICU-trained specialized team includes:
- Board-certified neonatologists
- Neonatal nurse practitioners
- NICU nurses
- Human milk technicians (LPNs)
- NICU-trained respiratory therapists
- Occupational therapists
- Dieticians
- Social workers/Case Management
- Lactation specialists
Our team will assist you in becoming comfortable with handling and caring for your baby. We encourage you to stay with your little one as much as possible. The unit provides private and semi-private rooms with outside windows and natural light to help with the development of your baby's circadian rhythms. Private rooms are designated for our sickest, most fragile patients and have sleeper sofas for parents who want to stay with their newborns around the clock. The semi-private rooms offer sleeper chairs for parents if they desire to stay as well. All NICU rooms are designed to create a quieter environment with fewer sounds of alarms and other babies crying.
Neonatologists from Children's Specialty Group, an affiliate of CHKD, provide continuing care services for our NICU patients. They are board-certified physicians in both pediatrics and neonatal-perinatal medicine and specialist in high-risk deliveries.
When it's close to taking your baby home, the NICU team will provide you with the tools and education to ensure a safe transition home. We are always available to answer your questions and concerns.
