We’re here for you
At Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, we’re guided by our mission to improve health every day. We’ll work together as a team to provide you the best birthing experience possible.
Why choose Sentara Norfolk General Hospital?
At Sentara Family Maternity Centers, from the start of labor to the first days with your newborn, it’s your birth, your way. That means our dedicated team of physicians, midwives, nurses, lactation consultants and support staff will do whatever we can to prioritize your preferences - whether it’s natural birth, pain management, skin-to-skin contact, delayed cord clamping, rooming in or infant nutrition.
We are uniquely able to accommodate a wide range of pregnancy and birth experiences. We have the area's only dedicated high-risk antepartum unit, where we care for mothers with the most complicated pregnancies, and a 57-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for babies who need a higher level of care. At our Family Medical Center, we do whatever we can to keep you comfortable and make your vision for your birth a reality.
Our Family Maternity Center features:
- Private birthing rooms for labor and delivery
- Dedicated operating rooms for C-section deliveries
- Special private postpartum rooms that allow babies to stay with their mothers
- A 57-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology and staffed around the clock by board-certified neonatologists
The Family Maternity Center includes a 57-bed Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) to take care of babies who are born early or require a higher level of care. Babies in the NICU may require more medical equipment to adjust to the world, but the NICU is also a place where we encourage parents to bond with their infants in their earliest stages of life.
Our NICU-trained specialized team includes:
- Board-certified neonatologists
- Dieticians
- Human milk technicians
- Lactation specialists
- Neonatal nurse practitioners
- NICU nurses
- NICU-trained respiratory therapists
- Occupational therapists
- Social workers and case managers
The unit provides private and semi-private rooms with outside windows and natural light to help with the development of your baby's circadian rhythms. Private rooms are designated for our sickest, most fragile patients and have sleeper sofas for parents who want to stay with their newborns around the clock. The semi-private rooms offer sleeper chairs for parents if they desire to stay as well. All NICU rooms are designed to create a quieter environment with fewer sounds of alarms and other babies crying.
Neonatologists from Children's Specialty Group, an affiliate of Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters, provide continuing care services for our NICU patients. They are board-certified physicians in both pediatrics and neonatal-perinatal medicine and specialize in high-risk deliveries.
When it's time to take your baby home, the NICU team will provide you with the tools and education to ensure a safe transition.
