Dr. Colonna earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond, VA, in 1983 after receiving his Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, VA, in 1979.His post graduate studies were performed at the University of California in Los Angeles, CA, from 1983 to 1992. They included Resident I -IV, Research Fellow in Liver Transplantation, Chief Resident in General Surgery and Clinical Fellow in Liver Transplantation. Dr. Colonna’s professional experience includes Director of the Liver Transplant Program at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC, from 1992-1998; Director of Liver Transplantation & Hepatobiliary Surgery, Division of Transplantation, at the University of Maryland Medical System in Baltimore, MD, from 1998-2002; and currently, Surgical Director of Renal and Pancreas Transplant at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters.
He has performed over 1,000 kidney transplants. Dr. Colonna is certified by the American Board of Surgery and the National Board of Medical Examiners. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons.
