Christopher Barreiro, M.D.

Dr. Barreiro is an experienced cardiothoracic surgeon with special interest in valvular heart disease, heart transplantation and mechanical circulatory support, as well as surgeries of the thoracic aorta. During his time at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine he was engaged in multiple research endeavors and authored numerous scientific papers and book chapters. His research interests focused on neuroprotective strategies during hypothermic circulatory arrest, as well as continuous hypothermic perfusion strategies for explanted donor hearts. In 2006, he also spent six months abroad at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin, Ireland. While there, he focused on both gastrointestinal and thoracic surgery.
Dr. Barreiro resides in Virginia Beach with his wife and four sons. When he is not caring for patients, he enjoys running, biking and coaching his sons in youth baseball.

Dr. Barreiro is the cardiac surgical lead of Sentara's Comprehensive Aortic Center and is the Co-PI of the TRIOMPHE study for Sentara Healthcare. This study is investigating the safety and effectiveness of treating aortic arch aneurysms with the NEXUS™ Graft, a novel endovascular aortic arch branch graft.Sentara Healthcare implanted the first TRIOMPHE Study patient.
