The Sentara vascular specialists use advanced, state-of-the-art imaging and diagnostic tools to diagnose all vascular conditions. We are accredited by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Vascular Laboratories. These accreditations reflect our commitment to meeting the highest quality standards.
We perform imaging tests at locations throughout the communities we serve. Our vascular labs connect seamlessly with our vascular care.
At our PVL, our specialists use advanced imaging technology to create highly sophisticated images of your veins and arteries to view:
- Blockages
- Clots
- Abnormal narrowing
- Flow disorders
The images help our specialists evaluate circulatory disturbances involving blood flow to the brain, kidney, arms, hands, legs and feet. At Sentara, we believe in using the most comprehensive, least invasive methods possible, which ensures that you receive the best care with the lowest risk for pain and complications.
Our vascular technologists are highly skilled and have extensive experience. Tests we perform include:
- Ankle brachial index (ABI): Determined by calculating the blood pressure in your ankle divided by the blood pressure in your arm. If the ratio is 0.90 or less, blood flow to your leg may be partially blocked, which indicates leg artery disease.
- Arteriogram: We guide a catheter (a flexible, thin tube) through an artery to the study area. Then we inject dye into the catheter and take X-rays. The dye enables us to see how the blood flows.
- Computed tomography angiogram (CTA): Similar to a CT scan, we inject a contrast material or dye into your vein and take cross-sectional X-rays of your vessels.
- Doppler and duplex ultrasound: Uses high-frequency sound waves to create moving images of your vessels.
- Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA): Radio waves and a magnetic field produce detailed images of blood vessels.
- Venogram: We inject dye into your vein and take a series of X-rays to check for blockages.
