If you are at risk for coronary artery disease - the most common form of heart disease - you probably have questions and concerns. At Sentara, our heart experts can help. We specialize in detecting heart disease early to prevent life-threatening problems like heart attacks.
This condition occurs when cholesterol and fatty deposits called plaque buildup in the arteries. Plaque deposits narrow the arteries and restrict blood flow.
It can take years for plaque to accumulate. Most people are unaware that their heart health is in jeopardy. Left undetected and untreated, coronary artery disease increases the risk of heart attack, arrhythmias (abnormal heart rhythm) and heart failure.
The most common symptom of coronary artery disease is chest pain, pressure or discomfort (called angina).
People often find out they have coronary artery disease after having a heart attack. Common symptoms of a heart attack include:
- Angina
- Cold sweats
- Lightheadedness
- Nausea or vomiting
- Shortness of breath
- Weakness
Women sometimes may experience additional heart attack symptoms, such as back or jaw pain. They're also more likely than men to experience nausea or vomiting and shortness of breath.
Many different factors increase your risk of developing coronary artery disease. Some of these factors you can’t control, such as older age and a family history of heart disease.
But you may be able to manage other risk factors, including these conditions and lifestyle habits:
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Increased stress
- Lack of exercise
- Smoking
- Type 2 diabetes
- Unhealthy eating habits
Depending on the severity of the condition, your doctor may recommend medication, lifestyle changes or surgery. Please learn more about coronary artery disease treatments.
