Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center respiratory care services is staffed by credentialed respiratory care practitioners providing life-supporting care with the direction of a board certified physicians specializing in pulmonary and critical care medicine. Pulmonologists are specialized in treating acute and chronic conditions affecting the pulmonary system through a variety of mechanisms including oxygen therapy, inhaled medication therapy, breathing equipment and education. Working closely with other health care professionals, they support the cardiopulmonary function of all age groups in a variety of settings including:
- Mechanical ventilation for all age groups
- Oxygen therapy
- Inhaled bronchodilator therapy
- Continuous Positive Airways Pressure (CPAP) and Bilevel Positive Airway Pressure Therapy (BiPAP)
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
- Hyperinflation therapy for the prevention and treatment of pneumonia
- Pulse oximetry (non-invasive test to assess blood oxygen saturation)
- Arterial blood gases (ABG) - a test to determine blood oxygen and carbon dioxide levels
- Smoking cessation counseling
- Disease education (i.e. asthma, chronic lung disease)
Respiratory care services is prepared seven days a week, 24 hours a day for inpatient and emergency care.
