Sentara Williamsburg Regional Medical Center offers Inpatient Rehabilitation Services including:
- Occupational therapy
- Physical therapy
- Speech pathology and language therapy
Inpatient rehabilitation treats all hospital patients except newborns. Varying diagnoses in addition to neurological, orthopaedic and wounds are treated. In addition to patient care, rehabilitation staff continuously strives to improve the community's health through guest lectures for community and hospital groups on various education and training topics.
Rehabilitation is designed to achieve an optimal level of functioning, self-care, self-responsibility, independence and quality of life. Achieving the patients optimal level of function means restoring, improving or maintaining the patient's assessed level of functioning.
Rehabilitation aims to minimize symptoms, exacerbation of chronic illnesses, impairments, and disabilities. Emphasis is placed on maximizing functional independence through application of therapeutic procedures including posture, locomotion, strength, endurance, balance, coordination, joint mobility, flexibility, pain and performance of activities of daily living.
Specific applications, most performed at a patient’s bedside, may include:
- Gait/transfer training
- Evaluation and instruction in the use of adaptive equipment
- Therapeutic modalities
- Home exercise instruction
- Manual therapy
- Neuromuscular re-education techniques
