Industrial Rehab
Through Sentara RMH Rehab Services, Sentara Occupational Health Specialists offers the following industrial rehab programs to create a safer and more efficient workplace:
Pre-placement screenings measure a client’s maximum lifting ability in several lift positions, as well as cardiovascular endurance.
Job site evaluations can be performed for an entire organization or specific to one person or one job. The goal of these evaluations is to position the worker in the safest, most productive and energy-efficient manner.
Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCEs) are used to assess an injured worker’s ability to safely return to work. Components of this test include a musculoskeletal evaluation, material handling, positional tolerances, dexterity evaluation, endurance testing and a psychological screen to address the effect of pain on the worker.
Educational programs can vary according to the individual needs of the organization. Programs can be customized with slides of the actual workplace if desired. Programs include but are not limited to:
- Body mechanics—how to lift correctly
- Back education—injury prevention
- Cumulative trauma disorders—overuse injuries
- Carpal tunnel prevention
- Joint protection
- Stress in the workplace

On-site Programs
Mobile Mammography Diagnostics Unit
A breast X-ray, known as a mammogram, is the best way to find cancer in its earliest stages—up to two years before it can be felt. If breast cancer is detected early, 90 percent of women can be treated successfully. All women age 40 or older should have a mammogram every year.
To make this important screening more available to your employees, Sentara RMH Medical Center can bring the mobile mammography service to your place of business.
The mammography van provides the same quality service that women enjoy at Sentara RMH Women's Center, and employees can be back at work within approximately 30 minutes. Many women who have used this service report that they would not have had a mammogram if it had not been made available at their worksite. To schedule call 540-433-4641.
Cholesterol Screening
In cooperation with the Sentara RMH Wellness Center, Sentara Occupational Health Specialists offers on-site cholesterol screenings for employees. The Wellness Center employs the latest technology in cholesterol screening. Accurate results are available in five minutes using a simple finger-stick method that draws a small amount of blood.
It has long been known that smoking, high blood pressure and family history are risk factors for cardiovascular disease. However, people often underestimate the importance of knowing their blood cholesterol levels. You can now provide your employees with the opportunity to obtain this important information in a simple, cost-effective manner. To schedule call 540-564-5694.
Flu Vaccination Program
A study published in the August 1996 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine found that those who received flu vaccinations had 36% fewer sick days than those who chose not to participate. The study also calculated a return on investment of almost 5 to 1, a return of $25 on every $5 spent on vaccinations. Whether you wish to subsidize vaccinations or simply make your employees aware of their benefits, the preventive health benefits are substantial.
The flu vaccination program is an extremely popular service to area businesses and employees. Sentara Occupational Health Specialists staff is available to come to your place of business and administer the flu vaccine. This will make it easier for your employees to participate and minimize disruptions to your daily operations.
We will try to accommodate each business’s unique schedule and hours of operation. Times and vaccine are available on a first-come, first-served basis. We also offer vaccinations in our clinic on a walk-in basis. To schedule any of the above
