At Sentara Family Maternity Centers, from the start of labor to the first days with your newborn, it's your baby, your birth, your bond, your way. That means our dedicated team of physicians, midwives, nurses, lactation consultants and volunteer doulas will do whatever we can to prioritize your preferences - whether it's natural birth, pain management, skin-to-skin contact, delayed cord clamping, rooming in or infant nutrition.
Plus, our specially trained Nurse Navigators are there to provide one-on-one support at all stages of your birth journey. They are there to advocate for you and your needs.
Should your baby require extra care, we have you covered thanks to our special affiliation with the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters. At our Family Medical Center, we do whatever we can to keep you comfortable and make your vision for your birth a reality.

Pre-registering is a great first step to begin your journey with Sentara. This allows you to share important information with providers, including your birth preferences. Once you've pre-registered, you can sign in to Sentara MyChart any time of day to:

Located on the third floor, away from the everyday flow, our Family Maternity Center provides a peaceful, comforting environment for mother and baby alike.
- 24-hour coverage by board-certified pediatricians and anesthesiologists
- Lactation specialists available six days a week
- Infant security system to ensure safety for all of our newborns
- Ample space for dad, a family member or support person to spend the night
- Affiliation with Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters for babies needing specialized care
- Nurse Navigators guide and advocate for expectant moms from pregnancy through delivery
Our free guides give you an overview of how to care for yourself and your baby after delivery.
Lactation specialists are available six days a week at the hospital. For moms who want additional breastfeeding support after discharge, outpatient appointments are available Monday - Friday, 12 PM - 3 PM

We will bill your insurance for the consultation. (Please verify you have outpatient lactation coverage before you make your appointment.)
Child Safety Seat Program at Western Tidewater Health District
This is a Virginia Department of Health (VDH) program providing free car seats to families who qualify. You must be:
- Eligible for WIC, Medicaid or FAMIS
- A resident of Virginia, Western Tidewater Health District (Suffolk, Isle of Wight County, Franklin or Southampton County)

Nurse-Family Partnership
This is a maternal health program that introduces vulnerable first-time parents to caring maternal and child health nurses. This program allows nurses to deliver the support first-time moms need to have a healthy pregnancy, become knowledgeable and responsible parents and provide their babies with the best possible start in life. The relationship between mother and nurse provides the foundation for strong families, and lives are forever changed - for the better.

CHIP of South Hampton Roads
Prenatal to Kindergarten, Children's Health Investment Program (CHIP) is helping kids right from the start. CHIP provides services in Hampton Roads for children through age six and expectant mothers in the focus areas of health improvement, school readiness and self-sufficiency.
Through our unique team approach, families benefit from the guidance of both a Nurse and certified Parent Educator who meet with them at their home. Using evidence-based curriculum, CHIP is improving the lives of the most vulnerable families in our community.

Early Childhood Western Tidewater (ECWT)
This non-profit is focused on championing quality early childhood experiences in the community. They offer a wealth of resources, news and events to help children thrive.

Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program
WIC is a government program designed to help pregnant, breastfeeding, and postpartum women and their children (from birth to age five) receive breastfeeding support and services, nutrition education, community resource referrals and nutritious supplemental foods to families who qualify. Eligibility for this program is income-based.

Childbirth and parenting classes provide essential support and guidance for a positive birth experience. At our Family Maternity Center, we offer several childbirth education classes and support groups, all for free and all taught by our team members.
We also offer private and group tours so you can get to know our facilities.
Please park in the visitor's parking lot. If you arrive at the hospital between 6 AM and 8:30 PM, enter through the main lobby, and take the elevator to the third floor.
If you arrive after 8:30 PM or before 6 AM, enter through the emergency entrance. Someone from Labor & Delivery or the ER will assist you and bring you to the Family Maternity Center.
Once you have arrived, you will register with the front desk and then go to a triage area to assess your labor symptoms.
