Approximately 150 active adult and junior volunteers have the desire to help others and be involved in helping their community. They graciously give their time to support Sentara in its mission: We improve health every day.
Volunteers service areas include:
- Nurses Stations throughout the Hospital
- Women's Health Center - in Labor & Delivery, and Post-partum Unit
- Loving Arms Program - cuddling with babies
- Emergency Department and ED Registration
- Surgical Services
- Cancer Support Center
- Cardiac Rehabilitation Department
- Endoscopy Unit
- Main Information Desk
- Administrative Offices
- Gift Shop
- Advanced Imaging Center at the Century Building
- Sentara Lake Ridge Emergency Department

Adult Volunteer information
Adult Volunteers:
The dedicated people who make up our Adult Volunteer Auxiliary, provide support in areas throughout our medical campus.
Criteria for our Adult Volunteers:
- Commit to a minimum of six hours of service a month
- Willingness to go through an interview
- Participate in our training program<
Our Adult Volunteers also:
- Coordinate fundraising activities to benefit our patients and families
- Sponsor the annual Love Light Tree during the holiday season
- Enjoy several social activities throughout the year
- Meet and get to know new and interesting people
Junior Volunteer information
Junior Volunteers:
Our Junior Volunteers discover valuable opportunities to learn, grow, and contribute to Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center all year long. Interested applicants must be:
- A rising freshmen, sophomore, junior or senior in high school
- Between 14 and 17 years of age
- Willing to make a 6-month commitment
- Commit to a minimum of two 3-hour shifts per month
To apply, to our Junior Volunteer program, applicants must submit:
- An application (only available during submission dates)
- A school transcript (official or unofficial)
- A letter of recommendation from a guidance counselor or teacher
- Participate in a group interview which is held twice a year
Deadlines for submitting a Junior Volunteer application:
- Fall application period: August 1 - August 15 (group interview held in Sept.).
- Spring application period: February 1 - February 15 (group interviews held in March).
Interviews will be scheduled for the first 35 candidates who submit a complete application during the two application periods.
Junior Volunteer applications are only available during the submission periods.
