Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is a Level I Trauma facility – taking on the highest level of trauma care available. With 40 patient beds, the emergency department serves over 70,000 patients each year and is equipped to handle a variety of emergencies. Emergency medicine board-certified or board-eligible physicians staff all Sentara emergency departments, and on-call specialists are utilized to assist with patient care as needed.
Our goal is to use these available resources to provide each patient with the best care possible, in the timeliest way possible. Based on severity of illness or injury, patients have access to the following care paths:
Focused Care and Fast Track
Hours: Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. – 1 a.m.; Weekends, 9 a.m. – 11 p.m.
Focused Care and Fast Track options are for minor emergencies. Providers and nurses work to ensure the shortest treatment times possible.
Acute Care
Hours: 24 hours daily
Acute Care is reserved for patients with severe illnesses or injuries. Length of treatment time varies based on additional testing or imaging that may be required for more serious emergencies.
