There is a wealth of information about the “best” ways to lose weight. While some of this information is accurate, much of it is not. None of it considers your personal health issues. For those with more serious health concerns, it is especially important to distinguish fact from fiction. At Sentara Comprehensive Weight Loss Solutions, we practice only evidence-based medicine and take your overall health into consideration.
Our program
Our medical (non-surgical) weight loss program is truly comprehensive and addresses multiple factors that affect your weight, such as:
- Medical issues and medications that may contribute to weight gain
- Dietary advice specific to each patient’s health and lifestyle
- Behavior Modification and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to help make needed changes easier and long-lasting
- Exercise therapy customized to each patient’s specific need
Our program is designed to teach you how to eat healthier and be healthier for the rest of your life. We do not endorse extreme or fad diets for short-term weight loss.
We may prescribe medications to help you follow your eating plan. These medications can assist you in adhering to your weight loss regimen. To achieve your weight loss goal, you must follow the comprehensive plan we will create together. Occasionally, we can switch current medications that promote weight gain to those that assist with weight loss. You will undergo a full evaluation to determine which medication options are appropriate for you, and we will regularly re-evaluate to make necessary adjustments.
We will be happy to keep your primary care physician informed with our office notes and lab results. Even though we will help monitor and address your obesity-related health concerns, you must continue to visit your primary care physician as often as recommended.

Medical weight loss is a suitable option for patients with a BMI over 30, which indicates obesity. Obesity can be defined as a condition in which a person’s body fat percentage reaches a level that negatively impacts their health. This typically occurs when the BMI reaches around 30 or higher. Morbid obesity refers to a weight level where an individual is statistically less likely to live as long as they should due to their weight.
If your BMI is over 30 and you have at least one health issue worsened by your weight, you are a strong candidate for our program. Many health problems are associated with obesity, including high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease, as well as knee and hip arthritis, fatigue, and shortness of breath during exercise. If you’re unsure whether your health concerns could improve with weight loss, please call our office, and we will be happy to assist you in determining if you are a good fit for our clinic.
Your health insurance may cover your visit if you meet the criteria mentioned above. If you do not qualify, we offer self-pay programs that include our registered dietitian and exercise physiologist to help you achieve your best health.
