Sentara Health increases investment in new Halifax hospital to $107 million
Sentara is strengthening its commitment to the region, ensuring area residents have access to quality healthcare for generations to come
Sentara Health announced today an investment of more than $107 million to build the new Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital, a significant increase from the $70 million preliminary plan first announced in 2023.
The new modern acute care hospital, scheduled for completion in summer 2026, will be constructed with the capacity to expand its footprint as patient demand requires, ensuring the community has access to quality healthcare for generations to come.
“A thriving community starts with the health and well-being of its people. When a new acute care hospital strengthens that foundation, it's more than just a healthcare upgrade – it shows Sentara’s deep commitment to the future. The new Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital and campus do just that for our community,” said Brian Zwoyer, president of Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital.
“While other health systems are closing hospitals and divesting from rural healthcare, we have made the decision to invest in this region’s future. This investment is about much more than medicine; it's about molding a healthier, stronger community where every individual can thrive.”
A new hub of comprehensive services
The new Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital and campus will be a hub of comprehensive healthcare services, including general surgical services, intensive care, inpatient treatment, observation beds, an emergency department, catheterization lab, operating rooms, a procedural room, dialysis suite, imaging services, a laboratory, pathology, pharmacy, rehabilitation, respiratory therapy, and several other support departments. The campus will also include a new helipad on site that will provide faster access to critical emergency care services and improve transport times.
For more than a year, Sentara has been developing plans for a new acute care hospital that will meet the evolving needs of the Halifax region, working with clinicians to ensure the space and footprint maximize positive patient outcomes and care. Utilizing mock patient rooms, clinicians can simulate how the new space will work in practice, allowing for continued enhancement to ensure the best treatment and patient experience.
This new hospital and campus will include abundant green spaces, and each patient room will have a window for natural sunlight, a private bathroom, and accommodations for overnight guest stays.
“From diagnosis to recovery, this efficient layout will help improve the entire patient experience, ensuring seamless and effective treatment, optimizing for comfort, safety, and efficiency," said Nicole Dockery, Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital’s chief nursing officer. “The redesigned patient rooms will make navigating and efficiently providing care easier, allowing clinicians to tailor treatments as needed to support patients’ overall well-being.”
