Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital breaks ground on new hospital

In a major milestone for the region, Sentara broke ground on the new Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital (SHRH), a state-of-the-art facility set to open in summer 2026. With a total investment of $107 million, this new 42 bed acute care hospital will be a hub of comprehensive healthcare services, including general surgical services, intensive care, inpatient treatment, observation beds, an emergency department, catheterization lab, operating rooms, a procedural room, dialysis suite, a new helipad, imaging services, a laboratory, pathology, inpatient pharmacy, rehabilitation, respiratory therapy, and other support departments.

Enthusiastic participants came together to celebrate this significant next step, ushering in a new era of healthcare for the Halifax region.

The new hospital will allow SHRH to elevate the standard of care across the region, providing top-tier health services and attracting high-quality medical professionals. The hospital design optimizes patient-centered care and enhances all the services provided today. Enhanced design features include natural light in patient rooms, private bathrooms and space for overnight guests. Features like these add comfort and are intended to create an environment that promotes healing. The new emergency department design provides efficiency and compassion, by adding behavioral health rooms and vertical care spaces to improve patient flow and reduce wait times. Additionally, the new helipad will get patients the emergency care they need faster.
