The hospital’s prestigious award recognizes a provider’s excellence in patient care, customer service, communications, and teamwork.
Cardiologist Said Iskandar, M.D., has been named the recipient of the Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital (SHRH) Golden Stethoscope Award. This prestigious recognizes an outstanding doctor, physician assistant, nurse practitioner, or nurse anesthetist who demonstrates excellence in patient care, customer service, communication, and teamwork.
With nearly 75 providers on the medical staff, SHRH received multiple award nominations this year. All SHRH team members, as well as staff in local independent medical practices, can submit nominations.
“The Golden Stethoscope Award is a perfect way to recognize Dr. Iskandar for his contributions to our patients, team and hospital,” said Terrance Truitt, M.D., SHRH chief of staff. “We are fortunate to have him as a part of the medical staff and are grateful to present him with this award.”
Dr. Iskandar started his career as a cardiologist more than 18 years ago at SHRH and Halifax Heart Center. He has been an essential part of the cardiology program serving this community.
Dr. Iskandar became a cardiologist because of his fascination with the heart’s complex mechanics and the deep sense of fulfillment that comes with helping people through challenging health situations.
Cardiologists make a huge difference in patients' lives, often treating life-threatening conditions and improving quality of life. The cardiovascular system is also a critical aspect of overall health. Cardiologists help with preventive care, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases that affect a significant portion of the population.
Dr. Iskandar shared one of the most memorable moments in his career—an emergency, life-saving procedure he performed on a critically ill patient. The patient was suffering from a massive heart attack. Dr. Iskandar performed an emergency coronary catheterization. Then, his partner completed an angioplasty.
“Moments like those are powerful because I can directly witness the dramatic shift from danger to recovery, saving a life, and improving a person’s future,” Dr. Iskandar explains. “The relief on my patient’s face, the gratitude from the family, and knowing that the team’s skill and quick thinking had made the difference—that’s the kind of moment that stays with you forever. It’s a reminder of the impact we have, not just in terms of medical knowledge, but also in terms of giving someone another chance at life.”
Dr. Iskandar’s family has been a significant part of his successful career here at SHRH.
“The journey to becoming a doctor can be long, challenging, and emotionally draining, so having a supportive family can make all the difference in maintaining balance, motivation, and well-being. All the long working hours that we have to spend on duty, covering the hospital and the emergency room, would not be possible without a supportive and loving family.”
“It is a privilege that I was chosen by my peers to receive this prestigious award. I will continue to do my best, with God's help, to deliver the highest quality of care my patients deserve,” Dr. Iskandar added.
