Blue Ridge Virginia
The Blue Ridge region of Virginia in the western portion of the state includes cities such as Charlottesville, home to the University of Virginia, and Harrisonburg, home to James Madison University, Eastern Mennonite University and Bridgewater College.
The entire region offers a four-season climate, and is rich with rolling hills, cultural vibrancy, historical significance, and activities galore for the outdoor enthusiast including hiking, biking and exploring scenic trails. Divided by the beautiful Afton Mountain, part of the famous Blue Ridge Mountain Range, both communities are known for their plentiful wineries and breweries, Civil War battlefields and other historical sites of interest, shopping and dining. Four season resorts, such as Massanutten and Wintergreen, are easily accessible for an afternoon – or a weekend – of relaxation and fun.
The region’s heritage mixes with modern-day diversity and offers wonderful K-12 schools, as well as access to music and theater venues, such as JMU’s Forbes Theater, Staunton City’s American Shakespeare Theater and Charlottesville’s John Paul Jones Arena, which brings in A-list performances such as Carrie Underwood, comedian Kevin Hart and the Harlem Globetrotters. The area also boasts beautiful natural landscapes, including Shenandoah National Park and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Bonus: Both Harrisonburg and Charlottesville have close access to smaller, regional airports, but are easily within a few hours drive to Washington DC, Richmond, Virginia and Virginia Beach airports.
Halifax Virginia
Halifax is home to Sentara Halifax Regional Hospital. With a lower cost of living than some of the other areas, Halifax offers a relaxed and close-knit community filled with charm and surrounded by beautiful landscapes.
For lovers of the outdoors, the nearby river offers opportunities for fishing, boating, ample hunting, horseback riding and hiking. You’ll also find a plethora of local businesses and artisan communities putting unique crafts, locally produced goods and farm-to-table dining experiences at your fingertips. Those that come on Saturdays to the Farmers Market can also be found enjoying a stroll through the Mountain Road Historic District, dining at Molasses Grill, and exploring antique shops for hidden treasures. For race lovers, the South Boston Speedway and Virginia International Raceway offer a thrilling experience. Art and theater enthusiasts have cultural opportunities too! Plus with Raleigh, Durham and Richmond just a short distance away, there really is something for everyone.
Northeastern North Carolina
Home to Sentara Albemarle Medical Center, northeast North Carolina brings together affordable waterfront living, boating, water sports, fishing, golfing, and more. With the Outer Banks beaches easily accessible for fun in the sun, the entire area offers a family-friendly environment with small-town charm. In addition to miles of beaches where you’ll regularly see jet skiers, paragliders and more. You can take a trip to explore Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, visit the Wright Brothers National Memorial, hike in Jockey’s Ridge State Park and visit Roanoke Island, the site of England’s first settlement in the new world. The more adventurous can visit shipwreck diving sites. And Elizabeth City was even named the Hot Cocoa Capital of the World in 2022!
The area is also home to quality educational institutions, including two universities, a community college and a highly innovative regional public STEM school. Plus, it’s not far from larger cities like Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Raleigh, North Carolina, where you can experience even more extensive amenities and cultural attractions.
Northern Virginia
Living and working in Northern Virginia offers a multitude of advantages that make it a great place to call home. This region, known for its dynamic economy, diverse culture and quality of life draws individuals from all over the world. Historic Prince William County, home to Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center, lies along the banks of the Potomac River, a gateway to our nation’s Capital. The area offers the advantages of an urban city with the charm of suburban communities that give way to the rural countryside. Whether you’re interested in world-class museums, national monuments, performing arts venues of every kind, historic sites, award-winning restaurants, wineries and vineyards, major and minor league sporting teams, or outdoor parks and nature trails, you’ll find it here.
Northern Virginia is also a thriving technology hub and home to nine major government agencies. It features some of the best public schools in the country, as ranked by U.S. News and World Reports, with scores of highly regarded colleges and universities calling this region home.

Southeastern Virginia
The Hampton Roads area of Virginia is a diverse region encompassing Williamsburg, Newport News, Hampton, Suffolk, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake and Virginia Beach. A cultural melting pot in part thanks to the large military presence, the area is characterized by its diverse population and range of cultural experiences, festivals and events. For history lovers, Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown and Yorktown offer a chance to travel back in time to learn more about Civil War battles and what life was like for early colonists. In Hampton, the Coliseum plays host to concerts, sports events and more. Plus organizations like the Virginia Opera and Virginia Symphony Orchestra also add to the cultural richness. The Virginia Beach Oceanfront and First Landing State Park are popular destinations, and the area offers everything from fine dining to theater, concert venues and sports.
The area is also marked by a strong public school education system, as well as several reputable private school options. Old Dominion University, The College of William & Mary, Virginia Wesleyan, Norfolk State University, Regent University and Hampton University also call the region home.
