Mako SmartRobotics™ for Total and Partial Knee Replacement. Mako is an innovative solution for those suffering from painful arthritis of the knee. The orthopedic surgeon guides Mako’s robotic arm within the predefined area, and Mako’s AccuStop™ technology helps the surgeon stay within the planned boundaries defined within the surgical plan to prepare the bone for the implant. Mako surgery is performed by the orthopedic surgeon, who guides the Mako robotic arm during the surgery to position the implant in the knee joint. Mako does not perform the surgery, make decisions on its own, or move without the surgeon guiding it. Mako also allows your surgeon to make adjustments to your plan during surgery as needed.
Direct Anterior Approach for Total Hip Replacement: The anterior approach is less invasive, preserves muscles and tendons, and allows for a faster recovery, less pain, quicker stability, and fewer post-operative restrictions. However, not every patient is a candidate for this approach. Your surgeon will discuss your options to determine which approach is best for you.

When you hear the term sports medicine, you may think that it's medical care for professional athletes or younger people in competitive sports. While that is often true, sports medicine is really for everyone. If strained muscles or painful joints are keeping you from running a marathon or just walking the dog, our sports medicine experts can help you get back to the game of living well.
Our specialized team includes sports medicine physicians and surgeons, physical therapists, athletic trainers, and more. We employ advanced techniques to aid healing, including splinting and medications to injections using platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy and other nonsurgical and surgical procedures. Diagnostic X-rays can be done quickly and conveniently at the Sentara RMH Orthopedic Center.
The Sentara Sports Medicine Center offers a concussion clinic where patients can meet with a sports medicine physician and physical therapist for expert diagnosis and treatment.
