Minimally Invasive Kidney Disease Treatment

When appropriate, we may recommend minimally invasive treatments. We use the most effective, least invasive procedure possible. Advantages of minimally invasive procedures include:

Smaller incisions
Less trauma, blood loss and pain
Fewer complications
Shorter hospital stay
Faster recovery times

We are a leader in minimally invasive procedures, including renal artery angioplasty and stenting.

Renal arteries carry blood to the kidney. If the arteries harden and become too narrow or blocked, renal artery angioplasty and stenting can help open them. A surgeon makes a small incision in the groin and guides a catheter (a thin, hollow tube) through the femoral artery and into the renal artery. He or she pushes aside plaque (a sticky substance) and may use a stent to keep the artery open.

Open Surgery

Your doctor may suggest open surgery to help you treat the veins affecting your kidneys.

Renal Artery Bypass Surgery:

Renal artery bypass surgery: This surgery removes plaque that has built up in the renal arteries and restricted blood flow to the kidney. Working through an opening in the side or the abdomen, your surgeon opens the renal artery and clears away the plaque.
Renal Endarterectomy Surgery: For patients whose kidneys are severely diseased and require dialysis, we offer the full range of dialysis access and dialysis access management.

Kidney Transplant

Our Sentara Transplant Center features the only transplant program available to kidney failure patients in the Hampton Roads area and eastern North Carolina. A kidney transplant is a complex procedure that neither begins nor ends in the operating room. We take a team approach to your care from your first meeting and evaluation to supporting you in recovery. Sentara also help patients resume normal activities after their transplant.
